“God Almighty, thank you for you, thank you for your unfailing love, thank you for your mightiness which is immeasurable and unmatchable, thank you for paving my route with only the best bricks, thank you for constantly and gradually moulding me into an image of you, you are the ultimate purpose of life, no amount of Emalangenis, fame, or sinful vices will bring me the life I seek, with that being said Oh Heavenly Father I’d like to let you know that you are doing a great job at being awesome. AMEN!”
With this particular article I struggled with the title, I struggled because I wanted to do things slightly different; I wanted to title it before going into it because I usually title my articles after I’ve written them (little weird I know, but its worked for me so far), but after struggling with my own thought order and patterns I decided to just stick to my ‘normal’ routine and title it at the end.
As I was having a mentally saucy debate with myself I did however think of a few potential topics; there was ‘mucus music’, ‘harmoniously appalling’, ‘harmful to conscience’, ‘Ear-guard’, ‘Protect the drums’. All these titles did tickle my fancy one way or another, but then this is an article not a human-being, so it can’t have many titles.
A vast majority of the earthly population has some form of connection with music, the levels and aspects vary. It’s been said that ‘music is a universal language’ and I totally agree with this, it communicates and delivers a message. Its popularity may differ in certain parts of this circular globe we live in but the fact remains that it’s everywhere, it’s that vast, it’s that diverse and it’s powerful.
In common scenarios a servant has no influence, however music contrasts that in the sense that it is somehow a servant yet it has bags full of influence, influence has power, and where there’s power there’s usually a struggle, that why there’s sometimes a power struggle between what we listen to and what we see because what we see determines what we do about it and what we listen to somehow controls our actions as well. Another notable point about power is to never under-estimate it, in fact it’s wise not estimate it at all, whether ‘under’ or ‘over’.
Everything that you listen to has an effect on personality; as a matter of fact music is a powerful social force that taps into an individual’s personal identity, memory and mood. In the case of a lot of teenagers who are the group who listen to and have the most access to music; it really has a great influence on their identity development and their general well-being. So besides walking around and shamelessly staring at all these teens with head-sets or earphones stuck in the things growing on the sides of their heads, I got all ‘clickity’, got on a surf-board and surfed the net in a quest to discover just how much influence there is, and with my collected data, it turns out teenagers listen to an average of nearly two and half hours of music each day, and a lot of music today (well at least the more popular music) has just become hazardly unhealthy for even adults, let alone teens, it’s no secret that a lot of it has been perverted to serve purposes of evil, thus has become one of the most alluring agencies of temptation.
“So what really is the problem?” was a question I asked myself because music was not new neither were the perverted issues projected in today’s issues, so it hit me…teenagers now have more and easier access to music through portable media players and of course the mobile handsets. “Substantial yeah, but just not enough” is what I thought, “there’s got to be more to this”, that’s when I got ‘hit’ again, harder this time, ‘The youth has idols, the wrong idols for that matter’, and that’s where the trouble is, ‘idolatry’. I believe the most an artist can be is possibly a role-model not an idol which is something these artists have become to the youth. An idol is worshipped, and when you worship something you somehow fail to see its wrongs, thus what they do, what they stand for and what they say is ‘miles ahead correct’. The majority of the youth talk the way they do, think the way they think, act the way they act and say the things they say mostly through influence of the music. To the youth it’s become ‘once the artist has spoken, so it is so’. “Teenagers consider musicians their real heroes more often than athletes and rate the effect of music on them higher than religious beliefs or literature” (Knight-Ridder, 1999).
Sad really!! The filth that today’s music has been marinated and oven baked with, and the disastrously Earthly population eat it. It has been given the power to amplify rude and uncultivated natures, yet if rightly employed, music is a precious gift from God which is designed to uplift the thoughts to high and noble themes, to inspire and elevate the soul, quicken thought and awaken sympathy, promote harmony of action and banish all that destroys courage and weakens effort. With the right message and motive, it’s one of the most effective means of impressing the heart with spiritual truth. That’s why I imagine our creator shakes he’s head side to side with an ill-fated look on his face when he hears todays ‘rubbish-dump-worthy’ music, think of it this way, God gives you a gift, you indirectly and sometimes directly thank the devil for it. At the end of the day the devils motives and desires that are being expressed in today’s music, and the last time I checked the devil and ‘dim-wit, numb-skull’ co-workers were the enemy, yet God wants us to use every facility which Heaven has provided for resisting the enemy.
Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift our thoughts to that which is pure, noble, elevating, and to awaken in the soul sincere and extreme devotion and gratitude to God almighty, which is such a contrast to the uses of which todays music is now being devoted to, instead of glorifying God these lost souls employ the gift to exalt themselves. That which is the most successful agencies by which Satan allures the mind from duty and from the contemplation of eternal things…therefore “BEWARE OF THE RHYTHM”.
